From such a beautiful people and culture, to a paradoxical socio-political status, the nation of Puerto Rico, which spans across North America lies in a very grey area in world politics. Puerto Rico’s colonial history is over 500 years old. The weight of its status and its effect on its people has been reduced in the past decades to the unfounded ideology of being able to choose its status or relationship to the United States and the rest of the world: Statehood, Commonwealth, or Independence. This has reduced Puerto Rican nationhood and pride to that of a colonial state of being, “Sazon, Bateria y Soberania: Puerto Rico in the dance for Self-Determination” is Dennis Febo’s master’s thesis documentary which discusses the colonial history of Puerto Rico, its struggle through such history, its political relationship to itself and the world, and how this relationship affects the psyches of Puerto Ricans on the island and in the US. Our understanding of the sovereignty of self opens the doors in our understanding of our nations. This event will create the space for dialogue to uplift our communal understanding and thus uplift our communities. This will be a space for knowledge.
